Switzerland, 1924. The Alps at dusk. Everything is going quiet.
Twilight, Lake Geneva captures the hushed beauty of the Swiss Alps in fading winter light — snow-dusted peaks reflected in glassy water, the last warmth of the day bleeding out at the horizon. Lavery painted this during his European travels of the mid-1920s, a period of restlessness and searching that produced some of his most atmospheric work.
There is a quality of held breath in this painting. As if the landscape is aware it is being looked at, and is trying not to move.
Sir John Lavery (1856–1941) was born in Belfast, trained in Glasgow and Paris, and became one of the most celebrated painters of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His work is hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland, the Tate, and major collections worldwide.
