The Path by the River, Maidenhead - Sir John Lavery

Painted around 1919, The Path by the River, Maidenhead follows a woodland path along the Thames, dappled in the soft light of a warm, bright day. It is one of the tranquil English riverside scenes Lavery made in the years just after the First World War.

Sir John Lavery (1856-1941), born in Belfast, was one of the most celebrated painters of his generation. He trained in Glasgow and Paris, made his name with society portraits and luminous outdoor scenes, served as an official artist during the First World War, and was knighted and elected to the Royal Academy. His paintings are held today in major public collections including the Ulster Museum, the National Gallery of Ireland and Tate.
