Some are single words that English needs a sentence for — Grá, Sláinte, Fáilte, Féileacán. Others are full seanfhocail: Is fearr an tsláinte ná na táinte, Céad Míle Fáilte. Every fada is checked before it goes to print.

What the words actually mean

Grá is love. Sláinte is health — raised as a toast because the toast is a shortened wish for someone's health, not because the word means cheers. Féileacán is simply butterfly, a word about as light as the thing it names.
