A heavy-set man sits back in a spindle chair, hands folded loosely in his lap, a flower in his buttonhole and his spectacles low on his nose. He looks out past the painter as if he has already heard the question and is working out the answer.
This is Tim Healy MP, painted by William Orpen in 1908 and signed “ORPEN 1908” upper left. Born in Bantry in 1855, Healy entered Parliament in 1880, fought for tenant farmers, broke with Parnell, and survived every shift in Irish politics for four decades — in 1922 he became the first Governor-General of the Irish Free State. Orpen caught him fourteen years before that, in the middle of a long career. The portrait is in the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.4612), presented in 1995.
Sir William Orpen (1878–1931), born in Stillorgan, Co Dublin, trained at the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin and the Slade School in London, and became one of the most successful portrait painters of his generation.
