William Orpen (1878–1931) painted Edwardian society at its most polished and elegant — then went to the Western Front and painted war at its most brutal and unsparing. His canvases are held by the Imperial War Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. Few Irish artists have left a body of work this varied, this technically accomplished, or this unflinching.
