Painted around 1926, A Composition (Sea Rhythm) is one of Mainie Jellett's pioneering abstract works - a long, panoramic composition in which arcs of colour and rhythmic line evoke the swell and movement of the sea. It dates from the period just after her studies in Paris, where she absorbed the Cubist principles of Albert Gleizes.
Mainie Jellett (1897-1944) was a pioneer of Irish modernism. After studying in London and then in Paris under André Lhote and Albert Gleizes, she introduced Cubism and pure abstraction to Ireland, exhibited some of the first abstract paintings seen in the country, and helped found the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. The original oil is held in the National Gallery of Ireland.
