About this work
This portrait of Roger Casement was painted by the Irish artist Sarah Henrietta Purser (1848–1943) in 1914. It shows him three-quarter length, composed and dapper — the British consular official who exposed colonial atrocities in the Congo and Peru, then turned the same conviction toward Irish independence. He was arrested after landing from a German submarine at Banna Strand in County Kerry in April 1916 and executed at Pentonville Prison on 3 August 1916, aged fifty-one. The National Gallery of Ireland catalogues it as Portrait of Roger Casement, (1864-1916), Patriot and Revolutionary. The original is oil on canvas, 84 × 61 cm, and hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.1376), presented in 1958. This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.
