Constance Markievicz fought at the College of Surgeons during Easter Week 1916 and was sentenced to death for it, commuted only because of her sex. Two years later she became the first woman elected to the British House of Commons, and in 1919 was appointed Minister for Labour in the First Dáil — one of the first women in the world to hold a cabinet post.
