A figure suspended mid-ascent, ink and graphite holding the exact moment between earthly weight and spiritual flight.
But Trust the Muse, She Saw it Upward Rise
Harry Clarke's 1913 drawing captures a figure caught in Gothic reverie — neither falling nor risen, just held there. The ink and graphite work shows Clarke at his most lyrical, hovering between illustration and fine art. It's one of the more overlooked pieces in his catalogue, and one of the most striking.
About the Artist
Harry Clarke (1889–1931) was a Dublin stained-glass artist and illustrator who saw the world as inherently magical. His work blended medieval aesthetics with modernist vision, making the sacred feel immediate and strange. Clarke died young in Switzerland, his genius only fully recognised decades later.
