Trees at Howth – William Orpen
Trees at Howth captures the quiet drama of the Howth woodland just outside Dublin — towering trees, a dappled shaded path, and the still mystery of the Irish landscape. Orpen is best remembered as a portraitist, which makes a landscape like this all the more striking: his feeling for light and atmosphere is on full display, turned loose on a stretch of coast he knew intimately.
Sir William Orpen (1878-1931), born in Stillorgan, Co Dublin, trained at the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin and the Slade School in London, becoming one of the most technically accomplished Irish painters of his generation. His work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
