Robert Henri painted The White Cottage during his 1913 visit to Dooagh village on Achill Island — whitewashed thatched cottages in rich green fields beneath the soft roll of the Mayo hills. Henri was an American painter drawn to Ireland's Atlantic west, and this is among his most celebrated Irish works.
Henri (1865–1929) was a leading figure in American realism and a founder of the Ashcan School. His visits to Achill in the early 1900s produced some of the most vivid exterior paintings of rural Ireland from that era.
