The Virgin of Éire - Mainie Jellett

Painted in the early 1940s, The Virgin of Éire shows the Madonna and Child flanked by Saint Patrick and Saint Brigid, rendered in Jellett's late religious manner where Cubist-derived structure meets warm, symbolic colour. It was shown at the inaugural Irish Exhibition of Living Art in 1943, whose committee Jellett chaired.

Mainie Jellett (1897-1944) was a pioneer of Irish modernism. After studying in London and then in Paris under André Lhote and Albert Gleizes, she introduced Cubism and pure abstraction to Ireland, exhibited some of the first abstract paintings seen in the country, and helped found the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. The original oil is held in the National Gallery of Ireland.
