Painted in 1903, The Green Sofa shows Mary Auras, the young German model Lavery posed through a celebrated series of colour-harmony canvases. She reclines on a green sofa in a sparkling dress touched with mauve, the whole picture tuned to what one critic called a cunning weft of blue, green and pale saffron. It is among Lavery's most openly Whistlerian works - the sofa set parallel to the picture plane, a framed print along the top edge and a single blossoming orchid at the left - painted in the very year he served as a pall-bearer at Whistler's funeral.
Sir John Lavery (1856-1941), born in Belfast, was one of the most celebrated painters of his generation. He trained in Glasgow and Paris, made his name with society portraits and luminous outdoor scenes, served as an official artist during the First World War, and was knighted and elected to the Royal Academy. His paintings are held today in major public collections including the Ulster Museum, the National Gallery of Ireland and Tate.
