From high on the hill the ground drops through eucalyptus to a pale beach, a white house and a line of bathing huts, and a long jetty runs out into water turned turquoise over the sand. Beyond, the bay lies flat and milky in the morning light, and across it the twin peaks of Bou Kornine stand blue under a thin, bright sky.

Lavery painted it at Sidi Bou Said, the white village above the Bay of Tunis, on a short holiday taken with his wife Hazel soon after the war, at the invitation of Baron Rodolphe d'Erlanger, who had settled there.
