Seen from above, Poolbeg Lighthouse stands red against a slate-grey bay, the granite of the Great South Wall running out to it, while a ferry cuts a long white wake past on its way out of Dublin Port.
The lighthouse has marked the end of the South Wall since 1768 — the wall itself was built to stop the channel into Dublin's harbour silting up.
