Painted circa 1910, "On The Sands" has remained within the same family collection for over one hundred years. The setting is a beach that stretches in a long curve to the east of the city, where Lavery masterfully depicts figures at leisure: two elegant women and a young girl under a parasol, two more figures strolling further down the shore, and a muleteer cooling his animals in the surf.

The figures in this artwork are thought to be Lavery's daughter Eileen, who was twenty at the time, and his favored model, Mary Auras, adding a personal and intimate touch to the composition. Lavery's fascination with coastal scenes reflected the artistic influence of James McNeill Whistler, whose interest in water and atmospheric effects shaped many of Lavery’s works. As Professor Kenneth McConkey notes, Lavery’s Tangier paintings capture the distinctive light and climate of the southern Mediterranean, where the brilliance of the hues conveys warmth and humidity, setting his work apart from Whistler’s interpretations of the sea.
