Bartholomew Colles Watkins captures Murlough Bay at its most dramatic — sheer basalt cliffs, wind-carved rocks, and the full weight of Fair Head rising above the Antrim coast. A solitary figure on the shoreline gives the scene its scale. Painted in the 19th century, this is one of the defining images of Ireland's northern coastline.

Watkins (1833–1891) travelled widely through Ireland and Europe, developing a deep connection to coastal and mountainous landscapes. His work combines Romantic atmosphere with meticulous academic technique, and this painting is among his finest.

About this work

Murlough Bay and Fair Head, Coast of Antrim was painted by the Irish artist Bartholomew Colles Watkins (1833–1891) around 1860. It shows a remote stretch of the Antrim coast near Ballycastle, with a young girl standing alone on the beach and a cottage half-hidden behind her, the basalt mass of Fair Head rising above. It was exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin in 1873. The original is oil on canvas, 34 × 52 cm, and hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.4673), purchased in 1999. This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.
