James Connolly was so badly wounded defending the GPO in 1916 that he had to be executed sitting down — tied to a chair in Kilmainham's stonebreakers' yard on 12 May, the last of the Rising's leaders shot. Born in Edinburgh to Irish immigrant parents, he spent his life organising Dublin's dockers and transport workers before co-founding the Irish Citizen Army.
Connolly believed political independence meant nothing without economic justice — a position that put him at odds with some of the men he fought alongside.
