Evie Hone painted A Landscape with a Tree in 1943, a decade into the most productive period of her life. By then she had studied Cubism in Paris under Albert Gleizes alongside Mainie Jellett, converted to Catholicism, and thrown herself into the demanding craft of stained glass. The landscape paintings she made in these years carry all of that — structure held together with feeling, geometry softened by the Irish countryside she loved.

In this work, Hone uses overlapping geometric planes set at angles to compress the depth of the scene. The trees and fields stay recognisably Irish, but the space they occupy has been reshaped — flattened in places, pushed forward in others — in a way that recalls her Paris training without abandoning the land that grounded her. It is one of the clearest examples in the NGI collection of how she made Modernism her own.

Hone (1894–1955) was a founding member of the Irish Exhibition of Living Art and is represented in major public collections across Ireland. This work has been held by the National Gallery of Ireland since 1978.

This open-edition archival giclée print is made on 250gsm matte fine-art paper with pigment inks for long-term colour stability. Framed versions come in black, white, or natural wood with FSC-certified solid wood frames and shatterproof plexiglass, ready to hang.
