Connemara doesn't really have weather so much as moods, and this is one of the quieter ones — a cottage low against the water, the lakes doing what they do best, which is reflect back exactly as much sky as they're given. Ó Maoláin painted it from that stretch of Galway where the land gives up more to water than it keeps.

About the Artist — Barra Ó Maoláin ▼

Barra Ó Maoláin is an Irish artist known as the painter of the Glens of Antrim, whose landscapes capture the particular quality of light along Ireland's northern coastline — Murlough Bay, Cushendun, the dramatic sweep of Glenariff. His paintings don't simply record what a place looks like; they convey how it feels to stand in it. Alongside his landscapes, he is known for expressive portraits of Ireland's literary giants — Heaney, Joyce, Beckett — and mythological subjects including Cú Chulainn, the Hound of Ulster. His work is held in private collections across Ireland and internationally.
