Bartholomew Colles Watkins painted it in the 19th century and somehow caught that feeling — the stillness, the scale, the sense that the land here has been waiting a long time.
Watkins was the painter Ireland sent to its wildest edges. His landscapes of the west were exhibited across Europe and held in major collections — this work among them, now in the National Gallery of Ireland. He didn't romanticise the place. He recorded it honestly, and that's what makes it last.

About this work
A View of the Killaries, from Leenane was painted by the Irish artist Bartholomew Colles Watkins (1833–1891) around 1888. It looks down Killary Harbour — the Killaries — the fjord-like inlet that runs some eight miles inland on the Galway–Mayo border, with Mweelrea, the highest mountain in Connacht, on the left, and fishermen working the herring below. The original is oil on canvas, 32 × 50 cm, and hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.636), bequeathed by Miss F. Moore in 1909. This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.
