James Arthur O'Connor – Glen of the Dargle | Irish Art Print

The River Dargle cuts through County Wicklow in a steep, wooded gorge — one of those Irish places that feels older than the roads that lead to it. James Arthur O'Connor painted it in the early 19th century and caught something that hasn't changed: the way light falls through the trees onto moving water, the weight of the hills on either side, the sense that the valley is keeping its own time.

O'Connor (1792–1841) was the great Romantic painter of the Irish landscape. He worked at a time when the west and west midlands of Ireland were being seen clearly for the first time — not as scenery, but as places with their own character and mood. The Glen of the Dargle suited him perfectly. This work is hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
