A Preliminary Investigation – Mildred Anne Butler (1899) | Fine Art Print

Bring a touch of Victorian charm and masterful artistry into your home with this exquisite reproduction print of A Preliminary Investigation by renowned Irish artist Mildred Anne Butler (1858–1941). Originally exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1899, this stunning watercolour captures a delicate moment as doves tentatively approach an open bag of corn—an endearing and beautifully observed study of nature.

Who Was Mildred Anne Butler?

Mildred Anne Butler was one of Ireland’s most accomplished watercolour artists and a leading figure in the British and Irish art scene of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Thomastown, County Kilkenny, she trained at the Westminster School of Art in London, where she was influenced by the Impressionist movement and the naturalistic approach of the Newlyn School.

Butler became a member of the Royal Watercolour Society (R.W.S.) and was highly regarded for her exceptional ability to capture the charm and character of animals, birds, and rural life. Her love of nature is evident in her work, which often features scenes from the idyllic surroundings of her family home, Kilmurry House. Today, her paintings are held in prestigious collections, including the National Gallery of Ireland.
